    About Poon Hill Trek

    The Poon hill trek involves traversing the foothills of the Annapurna range. Ideal for those who have limited time or for novice trekkers who wants to get a piece of Himalayan experience. The journey offers stunning panoramic views of the central Himalayas, and a mind-blowing sunrise view from the top of Poon hill (3,210m). (weather permitting)  The Poon Hill trail is short and only moderately challenging, but the views that you would potentially witness are just magnificent.

    Besides the mountains, the terrace fields, rugged hills, friendly people, quaint villages makes this trip a memorable one. Also this area is the largest Rhododendron forest in the Himalayas. During the spring time (March to April) the rhododendron forests present an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors that adds a magical touch to the journey.

    Poon Hill trek journey starts from Tirkhedunga which is a drive of around two & half hours journey from Pokhara. We will start the day with an early morning 25 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, then meet the crew and drive to Tirkhedunga.  The road to Tirkhedunga initially is on a black topped road but later goes through an unpaved with bit of bumpy one. The actual trek commences from here passing through bamboo and rhododendron forests filled with spectacular birds, waterfalls, bridges then comes a bit of challenging portion climbing a steep staircase of around 3300 steps. On the trail you will come across several traditional Magar and Gurung villages. Early morning we will ascend to Poon Hill (3,210m) to catch a mesmerizing sunrise with mountain views which is the highlight of the trip. During the trek you will have glimpses of the central Himalayas. The sights of Mt. Dhaulagiri I *8,167m), Mt.Tukuche (6,920m), Mt. Nilgiri(6,940m), Mt. Annapurna I(8,091m), Mt. Annapurna South, Mt. Hiunchuli (6,441m) and Mt. Tarke Kang (7,193m) are all part of this excursion.

    After being cordially greeted by our representative at the Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be escorted to your designated hotel in the city and be assisted in checking into your room. The timing and location for a short briefing session concerning your trip will be arranged which will include a quick check of your personal trekking gears by our experts. You’ll have the afternoon/evening of that day all for yourself.

    In the morning after breakfast preparation of the trek then the city guide will pick you up and then  drive you to SWAYABUNATH stupa which is perched atop a hill on the western edge of Kathmandu valley. This is one of the world’s most glorious Buddhist Chaityas said to be 2,000 years old.  After we drive 18 km east to an ancient palace of BHAKTAPUR filled with monuments, most terra-cotta with carved wood columns, palaces and temples. We end our day with a visit to Nepal’s most sacred Hindu shrine PASHUPATINATH.  We will have some time to do last minute shopping before leaving for the trek.

    Take an early breakfast and then drive to airport at around 0630 for 25 minutes flight  to Pokhara (827m).

    Upon arrival at Pokhara we collect the baggage and then drive straight to the starting point of the trek Hille  (1,510 m) which is around 2 hours drive initially in a blacktopped road till Naya Pul then after on a rough trail which is around 45 minutes. Then after, we start walking to Ulleri with a stopover for lunch at Tirkhedunga. The trail goes crossing Tikhedunga Khola on a suspension bridge, then descends down to Bhurungdi Khola where we cross another bridge then climbs steeply up the 3,300 stone staircase to the large Magar village of Ulleri.  From here you can start having views of Annapurna South (7,219 m), Machappuchare  and Hiunchulli mountains.  Ulleri is at an elevation of 2,080 m, here mostly Magar people resides and are mostly into farming and agriculture.

    The second day of the trek begins with the trail climbing gently through pastures and cultivated fields then passes through a deep forests and climbs up to Banthanti.   The trek continues through magnificent oak and rhododendron forests, crosses two sparkling clear streams and climbs to Nangathanti 2,450 m.  During winter sometimes the trail can be covered with snow so in this case we might have to change the trail a bit. We then walk for another hour to Ghorepani. From here you can an excellent panoramic view of Dhaulagiri I, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Annapurna I.  We will walk further 10 minutes up to Upper Ghorepani (2,870 m) or Deorali.  Here you have lot of lodges, internet café and police post.  Hillsides below are covered with a various species of rhododendrons flowers, it is the national flower of Nepal.

    Early morning excursion to Poon Hill (3193 m), it is about an hour’s climb, provides an even better, unobstructed view of the high Himalaya (weather permitting). You will have a mesmerizing view of the sunrise over stunning snowcapped Himalayas. After spending about an hour at Poon Hill, we walk back to Ghorepani for breakfast. Have breakfast collect the bags then we continue to Tadapani.  The trail initially drops down to Banthanti (2,606m)  for 2 ½ hrs for a lunch break  then walks through rhododendron forest, makes some ups and downs to Tadapani, a clutter of hotels with a dramatic view of mountains at 2,540 m.  In case of good weather you can have a wonderful sunset view over the Himalayas. (weather permitting)

    The trail today descends steeply from Tadapani through forests, terraced fields of maize and potatoes to the second largest village of Gurung in Nepal.  From here you can get the views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchare mountains.  Have a lunch explore the village then from here we walk further down to Sauli Bazaar to catch a vehicle to drive down to Pokhara. The initial road is in rough mountain road but later from Nayapul the roads becomes better.

    Morning explore Pokhara and then transfer to the airport for flight back to Kathmandu.  Upon arrival we will transfer you to your hotel.
