    The flight into Bhutan on a clear weather day will offer some dazzling scenic views of some of world’s highest glacial peaks. As you enter Paro valley, you will sweep past forested hills with the slivery Pa Chu (Paro river) meandering down the valley below. Paro Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (watch tower) on the hill above the town will be fine sight. After finishing your immigration formalities you will be met by our Representative at the arrival hall.

    Then we drive 1 ½ hrs to Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, an exciting blend of tradition and modernity.

    Our tour today starts with a visit to the National Library which holds a vast collection of Buddhist texts and manuscripts, some dating back to several hundred years.  After, we visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum (commonly known as the Painting School) where student undertake a six year course on the 13 traditional arts and crafts of Bhutan. Then we visit the National Institute of Traditional Medicine (outside only), where the medicinal herbs abundant in the Kingdom are compounded and dispensed, and traditional medical practitioners are trained.  After our tour takes you to the National Memorial Chorten, the building of this landmark was envisaged by the third king, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, as a monument to world peace and prosperity.  Completed in 1974 after his untimely death, it is a both a memorial to the late king (‘the father of modern Bhutan’), and a monument to world peace.   The painting and statues inside the monument provide a deep insight into Buddhist philosophy. We continue our tour by visiting the Folk Heritage and National Textile Museums

    Today we head to Gangtey Valley also known as Phobjikha Valley, about 150 kilometers away from Thimphu.  En route, stop at Dochula Pass (3,100 m) for tea/ coffee while appreciating the striking view of the Himalaya. You will also visit the grand 108 stupas built as a memorial built by the queen, Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, to honor the victory of the Bhutanese army in the 2003 war of Southern Bhutan. After that, we continue driving to Gangtey. The drive through the countryside provides a glimpse of everyday life of this beautiful Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. It is a beautiful and tranquil place surrounded by lush forests. This evening is free. If you are interested, you can stroll around the Gangtey Valley and pay a visit to the exquisite Gangtey Gompo.

    Morning after the breakfast we visit the Phobjikha Sanctuary to see the rare black necked cranes (Nov-Mar only) after Gangtey Gompa (Monastery), dating back to the 16th century. Then start our journey crossing the Pele La pass (3,420m) on the Black Mountain range towards Trongsa, the ancestral home of Bhutan’s ruling dynasty. On the way we will pay a visit to the beautiful 18th century Chendebji Chorten. In Trongsa we explore the largest Dzong of Bhutan, Ta Dzong which has a collection of historical Artifacts of the Royal Family. After, we drive for 2 hours to Bumthang, the most richly endowed districts in terms of historical and spiritual legacy.

    This is one of the most spectacular valleys in Bhutan and also the heartland of Buddhism. The Guru and his lineage of Tertons (treasure finders), have led to the sprouting of many temples in the valley.  In the morning we hike to visit the Tamshing Monastery (one of the oldest monastic schools built by Terton Pema Lingpa) and Kurjey Lhakhang (where the Guru Rinpoche subdued a local demon and left his body imprint on a rock). We also visit Jambay Lhakhang (one of the oldest temples in Bhutan built in 7th century) and Jakar Dzong (seat of the district administration). In the afternoon, hike to Thangbi valley across the suspension bridge and visit the Thangbi Lhakhang built in the 14th century, dinner and overnight at hotel.

    Today is quite a long day we drive to Punakha via Trongsa crossing Pele La (3,42o0 m) Pass and Dochula Pass (3,100 m).

    This is an ancient capital of Bhutan and the winter headquarters of the Je Khenpo where hundreds of monks move en masse from Thimpu to this warmer location.

    After breakfast we drive further North of Punakha Valley following the Mo Chu(river) and then hike to Khamsum Yully Namgyal Chorten. This Chorten was built by the Queen Mother for heading off the negative forces and transportation peace and harmony for all the living beings.

     

    After, we will visit Punakha Dzong, the “Palace Of Great Happiness” constructed by the Shabdrung who unified Bhutan.  This temple is the great example of traditional architecture. It was here in 1907 that Bhutan’s first king was crowned.

    Today we drive to Paro  via Thimphu. Check into your hotel then the remainder of the day is free to explore the Paro township, or enjoy the spa treatments available at your accommodations. Overnight at the Hotel.

    After breakfast we visit Taktsang Monastery one of the most spiritual place of Bhutan. First we drive then walk of approximately 2 hours uphill takes you almost a kilometre above the Paro valley floor (for those who cannot hike we will arrange a horse for transfer up to the viewing point). The view of Taktsang Monastery built on a sheer cliff face 900 metres above the valley floor is a spectacular sight. The Monastery is also an important pilgrim site for the Buddhists. The great Guru Rimpoche is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress when he brought the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th Century. He then mediated in a cave there for three months where the monastery was later built. Refreshments and lunch will be arranged in the tent specifically pitched on the path to Taktsang Monastery.

    Return back to the hotel.
