The Dhaulagiri Circuit trek is another challenging treks in Nepal. The journey involves walking around the Dhaulagiri massif, which boasts an impressive profile. Dhaulagiri I stands 8,167 m tall and is the sixth highest peak in the world. But the massif itself comprises 15 peaks that are higher than 7,000 m. Overall, the trek is strenuous but highly rewarding.
The trail begins from Dabang village, which is a 12-hour drive from Kathmandu. The initial section of the excursion is blessed with the sights of the beautiful Myagdi Khola, in addition to gorgeous trails passing through lowland forests. Higher up, travelers find themselves walking through glaciers and snow, and cutting across spectacular mountain passes.
The French pass (5,360 m), in particular, provides a formidable challenge. Upon crossing this, travelers descend down upon the Hidden Valley, which is renowned for its wildlife and biodiversity. Thapa pass (5,200 m), at the end of the valley, is equally challenging. After crossing the pass, the trail descends into Marpha village, on the lap of the Kali Gandaki river. The downward journey can be reinvigorating due to some spectacular views of the Annapurna. A local jeep on a dirt road takes the journey to Beni, from where it culminates in Pokhara.
Overall, the trek is lengthy and challenging. One needs to be Physical fit, past experience walking above 5,000 m, basic ideas of mountaineering as how to use crampons, ropes and mental determination are prerequisites for embarking on this journey.
